Art on Wheels: The Scooter That Tells a Cultural Story
Getting around has never been just about moving from point A to point B. It is a gesture, a memory, a sensation. In Italy, every daily journey traverses layers of history and culture. From this reflection comes Art on Wheels – Where Innovation Meets Culture, the project through which TVS Motor Italia transforms the Jupiter 125 scooter into a moving canvas: a dialogue between industry and craftsmanship, between contemporary mobility and visual memory.
Milanese Debut: Aesthetics and Vision
At the Officine del Volo in Milan, the project takes shape as a narrative even before it becomes a product.
Not a simple launch but a cultural positioning: a brand that chooses to resonate with the local culture, adopting its codes, sensibilities, and imagery.
Giovanni Notarbartolo di Furnari, General Manager of TVS Motor Italia, explains: «In Italy, culture is something you experience, touch, and wear. Not something to be observed from afar. It is style; it is belonging. And we want to reach the hearts of those who live in this country by speaking their own language».
Ragusa Ibla: the Sicilian cart meets the contemporary
In Ragusa Ibla, at the Cinabro Carrettieri workshop, Masters Damiano Rotella and Biagio Castilletti preserve an ancient knowledge made up of slow gestures, natural pigments, and memory. Not decoration but language.
Not ornament but storytelling: “We wanted the painting not to merely decorate it, but to engage in a dialogue with it. For each scooter to tell a different story, yet together express something greater: the journey, Sicily, its deep cultural roots, and its beauty that continues to surprise,” says Rotella.
Their work, already appreciated by Dolce & Gabbana and Smeg and captured by Steve McCurry’s lens, meets an object designed for the contemporary world, giving rise to a natural dialogue between artisanal craftsmanship and urban mobility.
Three Scooters, Three Visions
The final triptych transcends the boundaries of industrial design and becomes a narrative:
- Catanese: acanthus leaves and scenes from the Opera dei Pupi transform the bodywork into a moving epic tale.
- Caltagirone: bright colors—Mediterranean greens and blues—a sunny aesthetic that evokes timeless harmony.
- Baroque:B masks, griffins, and madder-red lacquer, where decoration almost approaches architecture.
These three interpretations demonstrate how an everyday object can become a vehicle for identity, memory, and vision.
A new grammar of mobility
Art on Wheels marks a starting point: the first step on a journey that TVS Motor Italia wishes to build in the heart of the country, exploring new encounters between technology, innovation, and tradition. I find it inspiring and relatable how such a project can transform mobility: ceasing to be merely functional to become an experience, a language, and an expression.
“The greatest value lies not in the object itself but in the stories it can continue to generate,” concludes Notarbartolo di Furnari, sealing an approach that brings design, art, and Italian culture into dialogue.
