At the press presentation held in Milan, I had the pleasure of meeting Jeffrey Kingston, one of the most authoritative experts on contemporary fine watchmaking: a historian, author, lecturer, and collector who has dedicated his work for years to promoting watchmaking culture. As co-editor-in-chief of Lettres du Brassus, Blancpain’s magazine, he collaborates with various watchmaking houses and leading international publications in the industry.
Here is an in-depth look, through a series of questions, at the significance of the new Villeret 38 mm and an exploration of how this new interpretation fits into the collection’s history, in keeping with the values that have always defined Blancpain: proportion, balance, and timeless elegance.
You’ve been following Blancpain for decades. When you look at the new 38 mm Villeret, do you see it simply as a return to more compact dimensions, or as a reaffirmation of the Maison’s original philosophy, based on proportion, balance, and understated elegance?
JK –The new 38 mm models represent just one part of the renewal of the entire Villeret collection. This process began in November of last year with the particularly significant unveiling of the iconic Full Calendar with Moon Phase. It was only natural that this model should open the new chapter of the collection, because this complication was the one that, in 1983, marked the birth of the Villeret as we know it today. The new 38 mm Villeret models reaffirm the elegance, refinement, and understated sophistication that have characterized the collection since the very first model was introduced in 1983. The sequence of new launches also deliberately echoes the Maison’s history. In 1983, Blancpain introduced the Full Calendar with Moon Phase, followed the next year by the ultra-thin model. The same sequence is being repeated today: the Full Calendar with Moon Phases in November 2025, followed in 2026 by the new 38 mm Ultra-Thin Villeret.
In your opinion, what has Blancpain understood about the concept of timeless design that other brands have lost sight of?
JK – Watches designed to immediately grab attention are often a reflection of a certain design insecurity: the attempt to stand out and be different at all costs. But is being different simply for the sake of it truly valuable? It’s a bit like what happens in some extremely avant-garde restaurants that, in an effort to break away from traditional cuisine, serve up compositions made of tiny dots of sauce, foams, ingredients arranged on the plate with tweezers, or elements sourced from remote locations—all with the goal of creating something completely new. But in the end, what remains of the taste? History is unlikely to remember these creations. The same principle applies to overly flashy watches. Authentic elegance never goes out of style and does not need to be flaunted. A great timepiece, in its purest form, is first and foremost a personal pleasure, something that belongs to the wearer. This is the essence of the Villeret collection.
If you were to present the new Villeret 38 mm to someone encountering Blancpain for the first time, what would be the most important aspect for understanding its value today?
JK – I believe the Villeret collection can be perfectly summed up by the expression: “If you know it, you know it.” Classicism, discretion, and technical excellence don’t need to forcefully draw attention to themselves: they are understated qualities, yet they constitute the true essence of a valuable watch. The entire Villeret collection embodies these principles. You have to look beyond appearances and beyond the pursuit of visibility that characterizes other timepieces to appreciate a watch destined to retain its significance and charm even decades from now, just as it does today.
