“Edu Fashion Show – Spread Love & Data”: Art, fashion, and civic engagement to give voice to the numbers and faces of gender-based violence

The Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara proudly presents “Edu Fashion Show – Spread Love & Data”, a participatory fashion show that transforms fashion into a political act, art into shared responsibility, and the street into a place of encounter, protest, and beauty.
The event is part of the PNRR City Open Museum project, designed to take art out of institutional spaces and allow it to breathe alongside the city, its people, and the stories that inhabit it.
Conceived by the artistic duo Drifters – Valentina Miorandi and Sandrine Nicoletta – the project takes shape from an urgent need: to shed light on the human and economic burden of gender-based violence in Italy, a phenomenon that, according to ISTAT, generates an annual impact of 98.78 billion euros.
This figure is not just a number: it is a tangible sign of broken lives, denied rights, and wasted social energy.
Fashion as a manifesto: when data becomes skin, voice, and journey
On December 2, in the heart of Carrara, local designers, seamstresses, and tailors will showcase manifesto dresses, original creations adorned with percentages, writings, and statistics taken from ISTAT sources.
Each garment is a silent cry, a gesture of care, an invitation to look at what often remains invisible. A fashion show where clothes become living manifestos: created by local designers, seamstresses, and tailors to denounce the human and economic cost of gender-based crime.
The event will be open to everyone and completely free: anyone can actively participate by screen printing their own garment—a T-shirt, jacket, or vest—with the project’s graphics and messages.
A simple and powerful action that transforms participation into a collective ritual: the act of imprinting data on fabric becomes the act of imprinting awareness on the community.
A cultural project for the city, with the city, in the city
The Academy welcomes this initiative as a fundamental part of the City Open Museum project, which is building a new geography of art: widespread, alive, shared.
In the days following the fashion show, the graphics and garments created will remain on display as a visible reminder of the project and its meanings.
The concept is inspired by the essay “The Cost of Masculinity” by Ginevra Bersani Franceschetti and Lucile Peytavin, which investigates the social and economic roots of crime and gender-based violence. The project reworks these reflections, transforming them into visual languages, fashion, and participatory practices.
