EXPATS & NOMADS LIVORNO: DIGITAL NOMADISM
The cold January light shines down on the Fosso Reale, a project that smacks of rebirth. Several centuries now separate us from the era when Livorno began to show the world the many facets of its multicultural face. And despite social changes, certain well-defined identity traits remain.
Someone, perhaps inspired by the beautiful view from his window, seems to have rediscovered the common thread that connects our roots to the present day. His name is Simone Cavalli, and he is an entrepreneur who is currently spending the winter in Thailand.
The climate in Livorno is undoubtedly milder than in many other parts of Italy, even during the winter months. This is one of the reasons why Desirée D’Alba, a Florentine, Simone’s collaborator and community manager, moved to the city a few years ago for love and then decided to stay. When we meet her, she has a very cheerful face and a jovial manner, and she immediately tells us that Livorno is a great place to live.
One of the things she refers to is the weather, which she points out is usually mild.
Simone met Desirée when she started frequenting the coworking space in Piazza Cavour as a digital nomad. Both of them, in fact, belong to that category of workers who, thanks to the advent of the internet, have chosen to practice their profession remotely.
The two “nomads” can work wherever they want: all they need is a computer and electricity.
Founded by Simone, Kasa Kawa social coworking is a Livorno-based company dedicated to this lifestyle. Its spaces are welcoming and bright, furnished with color and taste, and make you want to stay and enjoy the freedom of working while traveling.
People can rent a workstation, but Kasa Kawa is also about conviviality: here, coffee is enjoyed in company in special relaxation areas.
Yes, digital nomadism is a real form of travel for those who want to visit a place, not wanting to settle for the increasingly common hit-and-run experiences.
For the Kasa Kawa project, Simone was inspired by his three-month stay on the Portuguese island of Madeira and thought it would be possible to replicate a similar model in his hometown. As Desirée also states:
“Livorno is a strategic starting point for exploring the rest of Tuscany. The inhabitants are open, helpful, and a little light-hearted. Above all, they have a visceral connection to the sea, whose presence makes for a lighter quality of life. In short, Livorno is a quiet, people-friendly city with a still affordable cost of living. It has a wealth of history to tell and activities and events to enjoy in the name of well-being and fun.”
As a digital nomad and traveler, what more could you want? This is how the idea for Expats & Nomads Livorno was born in November 2025. An alternative way to experience the city of Livorno. Every month, various events are organized for locals and newcomers who want to socialize and experience the city’s identity.
The project is still evolving, and another idea is taking shape: the creation of a co-living space, which will be the first in the city. Kasa Kawa and Expats & Nomads Livorno are thus becoming a meeting point for a crossroads of cultures of the third millennium, bringing to light the inclusive traits of what was once the Livorno of Nations, an example to follow in breaking down barriers and embracing differences in a digital key.
After all, Livorno is not changing its nature: it is simply returning to its roots. If merchants, travelers, and foreign communities once intertwined languages and destinies along its canals, today it is freelancers, creatives, and remote workers who are reshaping its human landscape.
Expats & Nomads Livorno is not just a project, but a sign of profound continuity: that of a city which, while remaining anchored to the sea and its authentic character, knows how to open up to the world without losing its soul. In this new digital age, Livorno is once again becoming a port—not only for ships, but for stories, ideas, and possibilities.
