At the Roots of Human Thought. The Furrows Theory and the Hypothesis of a Memory Capable of Generating the Future
Where does a thought originate? Not where it manifests in the brain, nor which areas are activated as we remember, imagine, or decide. The question is even more fundamental: from what process does the very possibility of thinking arise?
Science is gaining an ever-better understanding of the biological structures involved in cognition. It studies synaptic plasticity, observes brain electrical activity, and analyzes the neural networks associated with memory.
Yet one step remains difficult to explain: how can a past experience transform into a thought that did not exist before?
The Furrows Theory arises from this question. It is a theoretical proposal still under development, not yet experimentally proven. Its central hypothesis is that every meaningful interaction leaves a persistent modification in the system: a Furrow, an energy-informational “furrow” through which what has happened continues to influence what may happen. The Furrow is neither a fully formed memory nor a container in which information is stored. It is something more fundamental: the trace through which experience modifies the system’s future possibilities.
We are accustomed to imagining memory as a vast inner library, in which experiences and knowledge are stored and then retrieved. But if memory were merely an archive, it could only return to us what it contains. Human thought, on the other hand, is capable of producing something new.
We can connect distant experiences, recognize similarities, anticipate consequences, formulate abstract concepts, and imagine realities we have never encountered. When we find an unexpected solution or attribute new meaning to a memory, we are not simply retrieving a piece of information: we are transforming our history.
Memory, then, cannot be merely what remains of the past. It must also be what makes the past available anew, so that it can be recombined, modified, and transformed into something else. According to the Theory of Furrows, it is precisely this transformative availability that may lie at the root of cognitive processes.
The Interaction That Leaves a Trace
Every Furrow originates from an interaction.
An organism encounters an event. The event alters the organism, and the organism’s response, in turn, alters the effects of the event. Interaction is therefore not merely the proximity between two realities: it is the transformative outcome of their encounter.
When the event ends, something may persist—not necessarily a conscious or narratable memory, but a physical, energetic, and informational difference capable of guiding future responses. The process could be described in four steps:
Interaction → modification → persistence → orientation of the future
The experience would not merely leave a trace of itself. It would reshape the space of subsequent possibilities. A path already traveled would not become mandatory, but more accessible. It could be reactivated more easily or connect to paths arising from different experiences.
The past, therefore, would not rigidly determine the future: it would modify its probabilities.
A Possible Physical Identity
The boldest hypothesis concerns the possible physical nature of the Furrow.
Each Furrow might possess its own bioelectromagnetic signature, characterized by a central frequency and a small oscillatory envelope. In simple terms, we can imagine a fundamental frequency surrounded by a narrow band of variation. The central frequency would allow the Furrow to preserve its own identity; its oscillatory envelope would enable it to adapt and interact with other Furrows.
This oscillation would not, therefore, be an imprecision. It could represent the very condition of plasticity.
Thanks to this, different Furrows could recognize one another, synchronize, resonate, couple, or interfere with one another. They would not be rigid, isolated units, but relatively stable traces that are, at the same time, capable of transformation. Frequency alone, of course, would not suffice to describe them.
It would also be necessary to consider intensity, phase, duration, localization, and the conditions of the system. For this reason, it is more accurate to speak of a complex bioelectromagnetic signature, of which frequency would constitute the central parameter. Neuroscientific research has already demonstrated the importance of oscillations and synchronization in cognitive activity. However, it has not proven the existence of the Furrow as a distinct physical entity. This remains, for the time being, a theoretical hypothesis.
The Furrow does not contain thought. A single Furrow would not in itself contain a complete thought.
Rather, it would be an elementary unit of transformative persistence: something from experience that remains available for new relationships. Thought could emerge when multiple Furrows, generated by different experiences, enter into a common configuration:
Different Furrows → coupling → new configuration → thought
This would not be a simple sum. The traces would recognize, select, and transform one another, producing a configuration that was not contained in its complete form in any of them. Thought, therefore, would not coincide with the retrieval of a trace, but with the ability to recombine the traces of one’s own history to generate something that history did not yet contain.
The Furrow would not be a particle of thought. It would be the elementary condition of its composability.
The “gametic” root of thought. We can therefore propose an even more radical metaphor: the Furrow as the possible gametic root of thought. A gamete does not already contain the fully formed organism. It holds a generative possibility that, through encounter and combination, can contribute to the birth of a new reality.
Similarly, the Furrow would not contain a miniature thought. It would preserve a difference produced by experience and the possibility of contributing, by uniting with other differences, to the formation of new cognitive configurations.
It would be simultaneously:
- conservative, because it retains something of the interaction;
- plastic, because it can be modified;
- relational, because its function also depends on other Furrows;
- generative, because it can contribute to the emergence of what does not yet exist;
- temporal, because it links a past transformation to a future possibility.
“Gametic root” is therefore not a literal biological definition, but a theoretical image: the Furrow would not represent thought that is already constituted, but rather the structured possibility of its emergence.
From memory to imagination. To imagine does not mean to create out of nothing.
Even the most original constructions arise from elements we have perceived, learned, or experienced. Yet the result can be radically new. According to the Theory of Furrows, imagination may emerge when traces belonging to different experiences enter into a relationship never realized before.
Abstraction may arise from the recognition of a common structure among different Furrows. Creativity arises from unusual yet compatible pairings. Decision-making arises from the comparison of competing configurations, some of which are made more accessible by the system’s prior history.
Behavior, too, would thus become the expression of an active memory: not the automatic repetition of the past, but the present outcome of the possibilities that the past has helped to organize.
Thought rewrites memory. The process would not end with the emergence of thought.
Every thought produced would, in turn, become a new internal experience. It could strengthen some traces, weaken others, change the meaning of a memory, and generate new Furrows.
A continuous cycle would thus form:
Experience → Furrows → thought → new experience → new Furrows
Thought would arise from memory, but would contribute ceaselessly to rewriting it.
This might explain why remembering is never a completely neutral act. Every memory is reactivated in the present, within a system that has changed in the meantime. The old trace encounters new configurations and may take on a different meaning.
Memory would not, then, be the static guardian of identity, but the dynamic space in which identity continues to transform.
From the “cogito” to the architecture of thought
With the famous cogito ergo sum, Descartes recognized in thought the immediate evidence of existence: I can doubt everything, but not the fact that, while I doubt, I am thinking. The cogito demonstrates the evidence of the act of thinking, but does not describe its mechanism.
The Theory of Furrows could be situated precisely in the space between two questions:
How can I know that I am thinking?
and:
Through what process does thinking become possible?
The theory attempts to hypothesize an architecture through which experience becomes a trace, the trace becomes a possibility, and the possibility organizes itself into thought. This does not mean that consciousness has already been explained. Understanding how a cognitive configuration might form is not the same as knowing why it is accompanied by a subjective experience or by the awareness of being the one who thinks.
That boundary remains open.
A hypothesis that must be tested
The Furrows Theory cannot prove itself through its own coherence. To become a scientific research program, it must formulate testable predictions. If the Furrow possesses a specific bioelectromagnetic signature, this signature must be detectable and measurable. If it influences a future response, modifying that signature must produce an observable change.
If different Furrows can couple, there must be conditions under which coupling succeeds and others under which it fails.
Until such tests are possible, the Furrow must be presented for what it currently represents: a theoretical entity not yet empirically verified. This caution does not weaken the hypothesis. It rigorously defines its current status and points the way forward for research.
Ultimately, the Theory of Furrows proposes a shift in perspective.
Thought would not arise from a memory that merely preserves the past, but from the capacity of the traces left by experience to recognize themselves, oscillate, connect, and transform into configurations that did not previously exist. Each Furrow would represent the point at which a past event continues to exert a possibility.
The history of the system would not be a chain that forces it to repeat itself. It would be the material through which it can construct the new. At the root of human thought, therefore, there might not be a word, an image, or a preformed memory, but a persistent difference: a trace stable enough to preserve experience and malleable enough to become something else.
A trace that does not imprison the future in the past, but allows the past to generate the future.
