Inside the Dream: how our night worlds are formed

Is dreaming really desire? Why do we dream? It is one of the great questions of human experience.

Although neuroscience has accurately mapped the areas of the brain that are activated during sleep, a profound mystery remains: where do the images in dreams come from? Why are they so vivid, symbolic, and unpredictable?

A new theory attempts to explain what really happens in the mind when we dream

A new proposal—the Dynamic Dream Model (DDM)—attempts to answer this question by looking beyond neurons and memories. According to this theory, dreams are the result of the movement of deep energy currents in the mind, called furrows.

Furrows: the hidden currents that shape experience

The model suggests that within the mind there are not only memories and emotions, but also deeper structures: furrows, true “waves of mental energy.”

They are:

  • dynamic configurations,
  • not yet transformed into thoughts or images,
  • capable of influencing what we perceive, feel, and dream.

Furrows are not ideas: they are the raw material of experience, a sort of invisible engine that works deep down and surfaces especially when we sleep.

When the dream begins

The transition from wakefulness to sleep completely changes the way the mind works. Three fundamental transformations occur:

  1. Rational control decreases
  2. The logical part of the brain slows down, leaving more room for intuition.
  3. The outside world fades away
  4. Sensory stimuli shut down: sight, hearing, and the body cease to guide the experience.
  5. Emotional energy increases
  6. Emotions become more intense and free to move.

It is in this unconstrained environment that furrows emerge to the surface.

The birth of a dream

According to MDS, the first furrow that emerges generates three fundamental elements:

  • the first image,
  • the emotional tone of the dream,
  • the general atmosphere in which everything will take place.

Then a surprising process begins: the furrows resonate, just like waves meeting.

One activates another, which activates yet another.

This flow generates the storyline of the dream: scenes, sudden changes, environments that transform without apparent logic.

From energy to symbol: the secret language of dreams

When a furrow becomes too complex to remain in the state of energy, the brain translates it into symbolic images.

This is why in our dream experience:

  • vulnerability can become the image of being naked,
  • a conflict turns into a chase,
  • a process of growth takes the form of stairs, bridges, or ascents.
Dreams speak a language that arises from energy but is expressed through symbols.

Why dreams constantly change scenes

Dream logic is unstable because furrows:

  • grow,
  • become saturated,
  • and discharge.

Every time the dominant furrow is exhausted, the scene changes suddenly.

This is why we find ourselves:

  • in a room and a moment later in a forest,
  • in the middle of a dialogue and immediately afterwards in a chase,
  • with a person who suddenly becomes someone else.

Dreams do not follow narrative logic: they follow the logic of inner energies.

How a dream ends

A dream dissolves when:

  • the furrows lose energy,
  • emotional activity decreases,
  • or the REM phase ends.

From this perspective, awakening is not psychological: it is an energetic realignment.

A new lens through which to view dreams

This theory proposes a radical vision:

A dream is not a film projected by the mind.

It is not a reassembled memory.

It is not random chaos.

It is the profound movement of our inner energies that takes shape in landscapes, people, symbols, and stories.

The Dynamic Model of Dreams offers:

  • a new bridge between psychology and neuroscience,
  • a coherent explanation of the “strangeness” of dreams,
  • fertile ground for future experimental verification,
  • an original perspective for interpreting dreams.

But above all, it invites us to reflect:

in dreams, we observe the deepest workings of our mind, which never stops moving, even when we sleep.
