On Pantelleria, journalist Italo Cucci was honored for his commitment to preserving Italy’s regional identity
Set against a breathtaking backdrop, suspended between the sea, the wind, and lava rock, the island of Pantelleria hosted a significant public ceremony dedicated to promoting regional identity.
During the Public Hearing, journalist Italo Cucci was awarded the prestigious title of “Ambassador of Territorial Identity”.
The award, organized as part of the initiatives of the National Network of Genius Loci DeCo Villages, aims to honor individuals who, through their professional and cultural commitment, contribute to the promotion and preservation of the cultural values that define Italy’s regions.
The selection of Cucci is part of a recognition initiative focused on influential figures capable of telling the story of authentic Italy, made up of communities, traditions, and intangible heritage.
A veteran journalist, former editor-in-chief of major publications, and an authoritative voice in Italy’s sports and cultural scene, Italo Cucci has, over time, demonstrated an ability to use journalistic storytelling as a tool for preserving memory and identity, with a style that remains deeply rooted in local heritage and social contexts.
Today, also in his capacity as President of the Pantelleria Island National Park, he serves as a leading figure in the sustainable promotion of the region and the protection of the landscape and local traditions.
The ceremony, attended by institutions, cultural operators, and citizens, represented a moment of great symbolic value: Pantelleria, already recognized for its unique landscape and culture—one need only think of the alberello vine-training method, a UNESCO World Heritage Site—is thus confirmed as a model of best practices in safeguarding territorial identity.
“This recognition,” as was emphasized during the public hearing, “is not merely a tribute to a distinguished career, but a shared commitment to preserving and passing on the Genius Loci of our territories, so that it may serve as a catalyst for cultural and economic development for future generations.”
With the award presented to Italo Cucci, the community of Pantelleria reaffirms its role as an active guardian of territorial identity, strengthening the bond between memory, culture, and sustainable development.
