Florence Immerses Itself in the Blue of Juan Lin
From Palazzo Medici Riccardi to the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, two exhibitions explore the landscape as memory, emotion, and contemplation
Florence welcomes the paintings of Juan Lin with an exhibition project divided into two parts, hosted at two iconic venues of the city’s cultural life.
Following its opening on July 31, the exhibition Visioni in blu will be on view through August 13, 2026 in the Ginori Rooms of Palazzo Medici Riccardi. The exhibition series will continue from August 18 to 30 with Profondo blu, in the Exhibition Hall of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, where the opening is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, at 6:00 p.m.
Curated by architect Claudio Rocca, former director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, the two exhibitions represent distinct chapters of a single narrative, built around the color blue and its infinite expressive possibilities.
Born in 1997 in Buenos Aires to a Chinese family, Juan Lin was educated in both the East and the West, studying at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. This international journey has helped shape a style of painting capable of uniting the contemplative sensibility of Eastern tradition with the expressive freedom of Western art.
In the 54 works on display, created in oil on canvas, blue is not merely a color. It becomes a mental space, a place of memory, and a medium through which the landscape is transformed into an inner experience.
Cities, mountains, trees, and horizons emerge through glazes, layers, and transparencies. The images seem suspended, far removed from any purely descriptive intent. What interests the artist is not faithfully reproducing a place, butrecounting the trace that place has left in the gaze and in memory.
His almost exclusive use of monochrome does not limit Juan Lin’s painterly language. On the contrary, it amplifies it. The various shades of blue allow him to explore silence, distance, anticipation, and the slow transformation of memory.
Blue carries with it an ancient history and spans different cultures. In Chinese tradition, it is linked to nature, the sky, harmony, and spirituality. In Europe, for centuries, ultramarine blue—derived from lapis lazuli—was considered one of the most precious pigments, used with great sparing by painters and illuminators.
In the works of Juan Lin, this symbolic legacy meets a contemporary sensibility. The color does not simply depict skies, seas, or landscapes, but opens up a more intimate and meditative dimension.
“From this perspective, blue becomes the very substance of contemplation,” observes curator Claudio Rocca. “Its infinite nuances do not describe the visible, but make perceptible what normally escapes the gaze: silence, anticipation, melancholy, and the slow transformation of memory.”
Cristina Acidini, president of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, also highlights the complexity of the artist’s language: “Juan Lin applies color at times with expressionist fervor, at other times with meditative slowness. And sometimes with obsessive care, as when he repeats a geometric motif with minimal variations.”
Travel also plays an important role in his artistic exploration. Drawings, notes, and jottings gathered during his travels become the starting point for paintings in which experience and memory overlap.
The places he visits are thus not reproduced as mere vistas, but transformed into inner geographies, where nature, culture, and emotion converge into a singular vision.
With “Visions in Blue” and “Deep Blue, Florence”, the public is offered the opportunity to enter the poetic universe of Juan Lin: a silent, suspended space in which the landscape ceases to be merely what it appears to be and becomes what continues to live within us.
