La Gemma Hotel: Luca Cecchi’s shining legacy

There is a building in the heart of Florence where light filters through polished marble and the scent of jasmine. This is where it all began—and where, in some ways, it has been reborn: La Gemma Hotel.

In 2020, the city lost one of its most visionary entrepreneurs: Luca Cecchi, a reserved but determined man who had been able to see the future of the historic center when few others could even imagine it. Years earlier, he was the one who brought Zara to Via Calzaiuoli, transforming an ancient building into a temple of contemporary retail. But his true legacy is not in bricks and mortar: it is in his vision.

Leading this adventure is the Cecchi family: five siblings united by the same values and complementary skills, who have chosen to give shape to a common project.

Massimiliano Cecchi, 33, an entrepreneur in the real estate sector, is the group’s CEO. He is joined by Andrea, Maria Sole, Ginevra, and Edoardo, and their mother Alessandra, each actively involved in the growth of the Collection and in shaping, day after day, a shared but personal vision that speaks to everyone, with an important first step in a hospitality project that is not just a business, but a form of love: La Gemma Collection.

Why “LA GEMMA”

The story begins with an intuition, almost like magic. One day, Luca Cecchi – a charismatic father and central figure for his children – asks Maria Sole, his eldest daughter, to come up with a name for the new family business. This simple request led to a surprising discovery: the initials of the parents (Luca and Alessandra, “La”) combined with those of their five children (Ginevra, Edoardo, Massimiliano, Maria Sole, and Andrea, “Gemma”) form the name of a precious stone. A name laden with symbolic value, which immediately became the heart of the entire vision. Thus La Gemma was born, with the desire to embody love, beauty, authenticity, and uniqueness.

A poetic coincidence that transformed into identity. Each member of the family is associated with a gemstone and a value: Alessandra is the diamond, eternal love; Ginevra is the topaz, prosperity; Edoardo is the amethyst, serenity; Maria Sole is the ruby, courage; Massimiliano is the emerald, creativity; Andrea is the sapphire, foresight. Together, these gemstones form the beating heart of a business that is family, passion, and hospitality.

A legacy transformed into light

In 2023, the group’s first jewel was born: Hotel La Gemma, in Via dei Cavalieri, housed in the same building that once hosted Zara.

A symbolic and powerful gesture: where Luca had built, his children chose to be reborn.

The interiors, designed by sisters Elena and Giulia Sella of the Milanese studio DesignByGemini, interpret the nuances of the city with a refined palette, from green to powder pink, evoking the facade of the Duomo. They tell the story of Florence with noble materials, green stone-colored velvets, pink details, and the scent of leather. Each space is intimate and carefully curated, as if the city had decided to whisper—not shout—its beauty.

La Gemma di Firenze — 23 rooms and 16 suites, entirely furnished by Tuscan artisans — is only the first piece of a larger project: La Gemma Collection. By 2030, the group plans to open a facility dedicated to each sibling, each with a distinct aesthetic identity and values, linked to the character of the person who inspired it. The group’s second hotel will open in Milan in 2026 and will be dedicated to Andrea. Each property will be symbolically associated with a color representing each member of the family: Massimiliano is represented by the color green, to which the Florence hotel is dedicated, while Andrea is represented by the color blue, inspired by shades of sapphire blue.

Just two years after its opening, La Gemma Firenze has achieved a new and prestigious international milestone: the Cecchi family’s boutique hotel ranked second in the city of Florence at the Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards 2025,

an award that for over thirty years has been one of the most coveted prizes in the world of travel and hospitality.

Because the hotel does not just welcome guests: it listens.

It does so through attention to detail, delicate green and pink tones, and the almost family-like atmosphere of a place where everything is designed to be experienced, not just photographed.

And finally, a poetic rooftop where you can enjoy a delicious cocktail with the most beautiful view of Florence.Copia di ROOFTOP SUNSET 1 scaled

Luca’s: the heart that still beats

Also accessible to external customers, on the ground floor is La Gemma Caffè, an excellent location for a quick but high-quality and classy snack, with many tempting options. On the first floor is the restaurant “Luca’s”, which is much more than a tribute: it is a dialogue with the past. A magical place where you can enjoy excellent cuisine, even at lunchtime, and which can become a place for meetings and private moments, with excellent dishes and wines.

The cuisine, created by Michelin-starred chef Paulo Airaudo, reinterprets Tuscan tradition with a cosmopolitan lightness. But it is the atmosphere that makes the difference: warm, convivial, sincere. Like a hug after a long absence.

Sitting here means understanding that Luca Cecchi’s legacy is not only economic but emotional—a legacy made up of flavors, gestures, and glances.

On floor -1 is ALLURE, the spa.

This is where you will find Allure Spa, the secret heart of the building, a refuge where beauty becomes language and time expands into an almost suspended dimension.

Nothing is left to chance: the light is soft and amber, designed to accompany the heartbeat; the scents move slowly, between notes of bergamot and sandalwood; water is the protagonist, together with silence.

Every element—from polished marble to linen textures, from handmade candles to botanical essences—tells a precise philosophy: the elegance of taking time.

The spa was created as a natural extension of the Cecchi brothers’ vision: to offer luxury that does not impose, but invites.

The rooms evoke a sense of intimate calm, closer to a domestic ritual than a conventional spa.

Here, the care is not aesthetic, it is emotional. It is a form of returning to oneself.

The sensory journey

The journey begins with water, the fundamental and symbolic element of the project.

The indoor pool, with soft lighting and warm-toned mosaics, accompanies the body into a state of slow abandonment.

This is followed by the aromatic sauna, Turkish bath, and relaxation room, where time stands still and the noise of the world remains outside.

The treatments are by Allure Rituals, an exclusive line created for La Gemma Collection.

Each ritual combines expert manual skills and natural fragrances, in a synergy between science and perception: vegetable oils, Tuscan clays, lavender flowers, and raw honey become tools for deep, personalized, and tailor-made well-being.

It is no coincidence that the name Allure means “charm”: here, seduction is not aesthetic, but sensory.

It is that magnetic calm that lingers, like a perfume that cannot be described, only remembered.

The product line was personally chosen by Mariasole Cecchi in partnership with Biologique Recherche, an elite French brand in the world of skincare, famous for its “scientific” treatments with a high concentration of pure active ingredients, tailor-made for every skin type.

The family as architecture

Today, La Gemma Collection is more than a hotel brand: it is a family manifesto.

The name itself tells the story: “La” stands for Luca and Alessandra, the parents; “Gemma” for the initials of their children.

A web of bonds and memories that becomes the common thread of a vision: to restore Italian hospitality to its purest form, where luxury is not ostentation, but harmony.

Expanding beauty

After Florence, the Gemma Collection is looking ahead: Milan in 2026, then Rome, Capri, Venice, and Como, and finally new destinations in the south, in Puglia and Sicily.

Each property will have its own identity—a color, a rhythm, a voice—one for each child, but they will all share the same spirit: beauty as a gesture of continuity, memory as a compass for innovation.

The philosophy is clear: not to build simple hotels, but places that preserve emotions.

And perhaps this is precisely the secret of the Cecchi family: having transformed pain into rebirth, a surname into a project of light.

Beauty as a duty

In the world of hospitality, where perfection is often only a facade, La Gemma Collection chooses another path: that of truth.

Behind every detail—from the Florentine ceramics to the scent of the sheets, from the discreet service at reception to the concierge’s smile—you can sense the same idea that guided Luca:

Beauty is not a luxury. It is a duty to those who will come after us.

And perhaps this is why, upon entering the Hotel La Gemma, one has the feeling that Florence is speaking again with a human voice.

A voice that smells of family, of rediscovered time, of light that never dies.

That lives on and continues to convey emotions.
