Pineider and Ephèmera: Before Words, the Scent

In the heart of Florence, an experience weaves together fragrances, calligraphy, and memory. It begins by listening to what a scent evokes; it continues by committing it to paper; and it finally returns to the essences to create a personal olfactory signature.

There are memories that cannot be recalled through words. They arrive with a familiar scent, even before we can recognize the place or person to which they belong. It is in that space—between what we sense and what we can put into words—that “Before Words, Scent” takes shape, the journey conceived by Ephèmera Firenze in collaboration with Pineider.

The experience takes place at the Pineider boutique on Lungarno degli Acciaiuoli, just a short walk from the Ponte Vecchio. Here, the sense of smell meets paper and calligraphy, giving life to a story that each participant crafts based on their own sensations.

A Florentine story woven from gestures

The story of Pineider begins in Florence in 1774, when Francesco Pineider opened his first shop in Piazza della Signoria. Over time, paper, engraving, and writing instruments have come to embody a care that goes beyond the object itself: the gesture that the object makes possible also matters. Writing a letter, choosing the paper, and signing one’s name are ways of giving lasting form to a thought.

Ephèmera works with a different medium that is equally tied to memory. A scent can evoke images, rekindle memories, and alter one’s perception of a place. Where these two worlds meet, fragrance and writing become parts of a single journey: one brings personal impressions to the surface, while the other offers the time and space to express them.

Five chapters, many possible stories

The olfactory journey spans five chapters inspired by the Pineider universe: Florence, paper, ink, travel, and memory. Ephèmera associates each with fragrances, images, artistic evocations, and music.

Florence is the starting point, with its history of workshops and travelers. Paper holds what has not yet taken shape. Ink makes it visible. Travel evokes the distances a letter can traverse, while memory brings to the forefront what remains of an encounter or an experience.

Participants are not merely asked to identify the notes of a fragrance. The invitation is to pay attention to what that scent evokes: a color, an image, a person, a sensation. There is no single “correct” association for everyone. It is precisely from the variety of responses that an individual story begins to take shape.

When Memory Meets Paper

The impressions gathered along the way are then given form through writing. Using Pineider paper, a nib, and ink, each participant composes a letter to themselves.

Guiding this process is Caterina Scardillo, a Florentine calligrapher and lettering artist who collaborates with Pineider on workshops and projects dedicated to the culture of writing. In her work, attention to gesture, posture, and breath takes precedence over the pursuit of a perfect result. The letter thus becomes an opportunity to slow down and choose the words that give voice to what has emerged through the senses.

The journey finally returns to scent. Guided by Ephèmera, participants choose the essences with which they felt the greatest affinity and combine them into a personal composition. It is an olfactory signature born in that moment, from the images and emotions experienced throughout the journey.

For Ephèmera, scent is a language. Even before we understand it rationally, we perceive it. It can evoke images, rekindle memories, alter our perception of a place, and become a powerful form of identity.

For Pineider, writing possesses a similar power. A thought becomes a gesture of the hand, ink, a mark on paper, and finally something that can be preserved.

From this shared vision emerged a journey built around five sensory and expressive dimensions: smell, sight, hearing, writing, and personal signature.

In the end, each person takes home two mementos of the same journey: a handwritten letter on Pineider paper and their own fragrance. The first preserves the memory in words; the second can bring it back to the surface even after a long time has passed.

In this collaboration, Florence is more than just a backdrop. It is the city where two artisan traditions, born in different eras, find a common language to create something new.

Before the word, there is a scent. Afterward, a story remains.
