Sustainability as art: from thread to cardboard, the poetry of new leftovers

There are materials that seem destined to remain in the shadows: fabrics that lie on the floor after giving shape to a dream, cardboard boxes that have stored objects and then end up forgotten. Yet, it is precisely from these fragments that new beauty can arise. Two Italian companies, different yet complementary, have made the poetic transformation of leftovers their stylistic signature: MADAMORO, the fashion studio founded by Fiammetta Fazio, and Avanzi Cardboard Design, the artistic project of Alessandra Bray.

Fiammetta Fazio: memories in fabrics

Born in Padua in 1973 and raised in Venice, a city that refined her aesthetic sensibility, Fiammetta Fazio has Greek roots on her mother’s side and a deep connection to the world of antiques, particularly antique carpets. In 2016, she chose Lecce as the location for her atelier, giving life to MADAMORO. Here, scraps from the great fashion houses are transformed into unique couture garments. MADAMORO dresses do not follow trends, but build a fluid and elegant wardrobe, made up of interchangeable and timeless pieces. Their strength lies in their ability to convey memory and uniqueness through form. It is no coincidence that they have already been appreciated by the national press and chosen by actresses and personalities from the world of entertainment, who have recognized their refined balance between craftsmanship and contemporary elegance.

Alessandra Bray: light in cardboard

Alessandra Bray, born and bred in Lecce, accountant and artist, has chosen cardboard as the raw material for her research. A humble, fragile, everyday material that in her hands becomes yarn, weaving, light. With the Avanzi Cardboard Design project, Alessandra creates lamps and furnishing accessories that play with shadows and geometries, transforming waste into visual poetry. Her works, exhibited in exhibitions and also featured in cinema, are more than objects: they are presences that tell of resilience and rebirth, demonstrating how beauty can arise from the simplest materials.

Two visions, one shared sensibility

Fashion and design, fabric and cardboard. Two seemingly distant languages that come together in the same conviction: what remains is not waste, but possibility. In MADAMORO garments, recovered fabrics become unique sartorial mosaics; in Avanzi creations, cardboard is transformed into light and atmosphere. Both realities show that sustainability is not a sacrifice, but a creative and visionary gesture.

Ri-Frazioni: accessories between matter and light

This dialogue gave rise to the capsule collection “Ri-Frazioni,” a shared project that combines the tailoring of MADAMORO and the luminous research of Avanzi Cardboard Design. The collection includes bags and jewelry, some of which are equipped with an internal lighting system: accessories that not only complete the outfit, but transform it into a sensory experience. The name refers to the optical phenomenon of refraction, when light changes direction as it passes through a material, generating unexpected reflections and nuances. The prefix “Ri-” emphasizes the commitment to recycling, reuse, and rebirth: cardboard fragments become fractions of a new, elegant, and unique whole. The capsule collection was presented at an evocative fashion show on Lake Garda, where the reflection of the water, the movement of the fabrics, and the sparkle of the accessories created a dreamlike performance in which fashion and design dialogued with the surrounding nature.

An Italian story

The stories of Fiammetta Fazio and Alessandra Bray recount a typically Italian trait: the ability to transform simple materials into objects of beauty, to intertwine craftsmanship, poetry, and innovation. In this sense, the Ri-frazioni capsule collection is more than just a collection: it is a manifesto. It demonstrates that sustainability can be refined and exciting, that ethics can translate into aesthetics, that beauty does not come from abundance but from the ability to reinvent.

A common thread runs through the folds of fabric and the textures of cardboard: the belief that nothing is wasted if viewed with different eyes. Thus, “leftovers” become the future: matter that transforms into light, memory that regenerates into form.

In this encounter between fashion and design, between threads and cardboard, the true meaning of sustainability is revealed: a creative, poetic, and deeply human act.
