The embrace that changes your life: the story of Luca Spagnesi and Elisa Gonfiantini, ambassadors of Argentine Tango in Tuscany

There are encounters that arise almost by chance and end up changing a life. Sometimes all it takes is a provocation, a challenge thrown down lightly, to open the door to a new universe. This is exactly how the artistic—and romantic—story of Luca Spagnesi and Elisa Gonfiantini began, now among the most appreciated protagonists of Argentine Tango in Tuscany.

He is originally from Pontepetri in the Pistoia mountains; she is from Pistoia.

In 2015, tango entered their lives almost as a game. At the time, they were not yet a couple: it was Elisa, with an ironic joke about Luca’s “inaptitude” for dancing, who triggered something unexpected. That phrase became a spark.

Luca decided to put himself to the test, but above all to share a new experience with her.

From that moment on, tango was no longer just a dance.

It became a passion, a language, a culture.

From dream to profession

What initially began as an amateur pursuit soon became a true life choice. Luca and Elisa began studying with nationally and internationally renowned artists, attending training and specialization courses recognized by official bodies.

Since 2021, their artistic journey has been further refined thanks to their studies with masters and coaches Simone Facchini and Gioia Abballe of Rome, two authentic world-class tango stars. With them, they have deepened not only their technique but also the ElyLu Tango teaching method, which today represents their stylistic signature in teaching.

Over the years, they have performed on important stages, participating in national and international competitions, including the prestigious Mundial de Tango in Buenos Aires, the true world temple of this discipline.

Between television and competitions

The couple’s talent has not gone unnoticed.

In 2023, Luca and Elisa won the title of Italian Vice Champions in the Professional Division Argentine Dances category, a recognition that established them as two of the most interesting professionals on the Italian scene.

In the same year, after passing several national selections, they also appeared on television, participating in “Ballando on the Road”, the famous program by Milly Carlucci broadcast on Rai 1, as well as the program “… Evviva il VideoBox” on Rai 2.

Their competitive career continued successfully in 2025, when they reached the final in the Tango Open category and fourth place in Tango Escenario at the Metropolitan Championships—a spectacular and technically complex discipline in which they were the only Tuscan couple competing.

Tango as culture

But for Luca and Elisa, tango is not just about competition or performance.

Above all, it is about transmitting culture.

Since 2019, with the ElyLu Tango project, the two teachers have been dedicated to spreading Argentine tango, its music, and its cultural universe. Their philosophy is simple and powerful: tango is first and foremost a human encounter.

An embrace. A silent dialogue between two people.

A language that is understood first with the heart and then with the steps. As they often like to repeat to their students:

“An embrace is enough to change a whole life. The embrace of tango.”514256969 1349610673839256 8385306643730996542 n515404860 1349613877172269 1583809461199093410 n514966284 1349614107172246 5635596978457766302 n

The intuition of Sbarratango®

In 2020, during a complex period for the world of dance, one of Elisa’s most original intuitions was born: Sbarratango®, a feminine technique of Argentine tango at the barre.

The method, unique in Tuscany with a registered trademark, was officially recognized by the Ministry of Economic Development – Italian Patent and Trademark Office on October 30, 2020.

The idea came from the meeting of two worlds: Elisa’s training in classical dance, which began when she was a child, and the free, improvised, and sensual nature of tango.

Elegance, discipline, and precision thus merge with the emotional energy of tango, giving life to an original method that develops technique, posture, femininity, and expressiveness through work at the barre.

A growing tango movement

Today, Luca and Elisa teach at the Top Dance Academy in Quarrata, one of the most prestigious dance schools in the area. Here they hold courses in Argentine dances and Sbarratango®, the latter being exclusive to Italy.

In just a few years, they have managed to create a real and rapidly expanding tango movement, becoming a point of reference not only for the province of Pistoia, but for the entire region.

This journey has been made possible thanks to the trust and support of the school’s management—Micaela, Giorgio, and Jasmine—who believed in their vision from the very beginning.

At the same time, Luca and Elisa collaborate as European Cast Teachers at the prestigious international festival Tango Euphoria, which every year attracts dancers from all over Europe to the shores of Lake Garda in Lazise.

Today, their activities range from group courses to private lessons, from technical seminars to preparation for competitions and theatrical performances.

But beyond the titles and stages, what is truly striking about their journey is the philosophy that guides them.

For Luca and Elisa, tango is not just a dance.

It is a way of meeting, listening, and trusting.

A dialogue made up of steps, breaths, and shared silences.

And perhaps this is the secret of its timeless appeal: tango does not just teach you how to dance.

It teaches you how to feel.
