The Tamed Generation—Education, Technology, and the Loss of Critical Thinking

The latest generations are not simply more fragile than those that preceded them. They are the first major anthropological outcome of a society that has gradually ceased to educate just as technology began to do so in its place.

This silent substitution raises one of the defining issues of our time: not merely the fate of young people, but the very fate of humanity.

Analyzing one’s own era is always a complex exercise. History typically requires distance, time to settle, and the ability to observe events after they have produced their most profound effects.

But there are eras in which waiting means giving up on understanding. Ours is one of them.

We live in an accelerated age, saturated with stimuli, innovations, and symbolic transformations, in which society changes more rapidly than our collective capacity to interpret it.

In this scenario, the relationship between the younger generations and the world that hosts them becomes one of the key lenses through which to interpret the crisis of the present.

The question, however, cannot be reduced to a sterile comparison between generations. It is not a matter of determining whether young people are better or worse than those who came before them.

It is a matter of understanding what kind of human being is being produced by a civilization that has weakened the transmission of education, dissolved many of its own symbolic references, and delegated ever-broader functions of memory, attention, desire, and judgment to technology.

From this perspective, the fragility of youth is not an individual fault. It is a symptom. And, like any symptom, it should not be insulted, but interpreted.

For many decades, Western society has worked—often justifiably—to free itself from authoritarian, rigid, and sometimes oppressive educational models. The problem is that, in many cases, the move away from authoritarianism has not been accompanied by the establishment of a new form of authority.

Limits have not been rethought: they have been removed. Rules have not been explained: they have been weakened. Effort has not been integrated into the educational process: it has been perceived as an obstacle to be eliminated.

Thus, a part of contemporary educational culture has ended up confusing freedom with the absence of constraints, listening with the renunciation of guidance, and protection with the preventive removal of all frustration. But an individual who never encounters limits does not necessarily become freer.

On the contrary, they may become less capable of enduring waiting, conflict, responsibility, loss, and the effort required to master oneself. Every society transmits itself through a fragile yet extremely powerful chain: the family, school, community, language, everyday gestures, behavioral models,and the example set by adults.

When this chain is broken, it is not merely an educational method that is lost. A grammar of life is lost.

The family is the first unit of cultural transmission. Not because it should be idealized, but because it is the place where the child first encounters the difference between desire and reality, between impulse and rule, between demand and expectation.

It is there that the first relationship with limits, with time, and with others is formed. When the family ceases to fulfill this function—or fulfills it in an uncertain, delegating, or contradictory manner—the entire social structure suffers as a result.

Schools, in turn, have found themselves increasingly burdened with an almost impossible task: educating students without being able to rely on a shared educational pact among adults, families, and institutions. Schools have been asked to instruct, include, protect, compensate, motivate, correct, listen, and mediate. But no educational institution can truly function if the adult society around it no longer recognizes the value of discipline, responsibility, and the transmission of knowledge.

The result is a generation that has often grown up amid a paradox: enormously cared for on a material level, but less well-formed on a symbolic level; overprotected from frustration, but left defenseless in the face of a powerful digital environment; constantly stimulated, but not always educated to think deeply; perpetually informed, but not necessarily made more cultured.

This brings us to the second major issue of our time: technology.

The most radical transformation does not simply concern the use of digital tools, but their social status. Technology is no longer merely a tool in the hands of humankind. It has become an environment within which humankind learns, communicates, desires, remembers, navigates, and progressively forms its own judgment. In this sense, we can speak of reverse domestication.

It is no longer just humans who domesticate machines; it is machines that domesticate humans to their own rhythms, their own languages, and their own automatisms. Contemporary youth are not merely individuals who use technology. They are individuals who are shaped within technology, through technology, and, increasingly, according to technology’s internal logic.

This does not mean demonizing the digital world. That would be naive and pointless. Technology has expanded access to information and opened up extraordinary possibilities for knowledge, relationships, care, work, and creativity.

But precisely because it is so powerful, it requires an even higher level of critical literacy. The problem is not the presence of technology. The problem is its presence without an adequate pedagogy.

Even international organizations have begun to address the issue with growing caution: theUNESCO 2023 report on technology in education emphasizes that the use of digital technology should be appropriate, equitable, evidence-based, and sustainable, and should complement—not replace—direct educational interaction.

The crucial sociological point is this: living immersed in technology does not mean understanding it. A generation can be perfectly capable of using complex devices and, at the same time, remain unaware of their logic, limitations, and ethical, economic, and cognitive implications.

They may know how to scroll, click, share, produce images, generate text, and navigate platforms; but they do not necessarily know what they are giving up in exchange for that apparent operational freedom.

The difference between proficiency in use and proficiency in understanding is one of the great divides of our time. In Italy, the most recent ISTAT data show that by 2025, only 54.3% of people aged 16 to 74 will possess at least basic digital skills—a figure still far from the European target of 80% by 2030. This statistic is particularly significant because it demonstrates that the widespread adoption of these tools does not automatically equate to true digital literacy.

Technology has become familiar even before it has been understood. It has entered everyday life before it has been properly considered. It has taken over our time, attention, relationships, consumption, and language, without society having developed an educational framework commensurate with its power.

Memory has been entrusted to digital archives. Orientation to maps. Relationships to platforms. Judgment to algorithms. Research to immediate answers. Choice to automatic suggestions. Desire to notifications. Identity to the constant gaze of others.

The consequence is not merely practical. It is anthropological.

Every function that human beings cease to exercise tends to weaken. It does not necessarily disappear, but it loses practice, intensity, and autonomy. The less we remember without support, the less our memory is cultivated. The less we search without taking shortcuts, the less the search becomes an experience. The less we wait, the less we are able to inhabit time.

The less we think without assistance, the less our thinking can withstand the strain of complexity. This is not a matter of biological atrophy, but of functional atrophy: the progressive loss of the habit of thinking without aids, remembering without an external archive, choosing without prompts, desiring without stimuli, and relating without mediation.

Schools themselves find themselves caught in this tension today. On the one hand, they must prepare young people to live in a digital world. On the other, they must protect them from the reduction of thought to mere operational speed.

The OECD’s 2022 PISA data revealed that, on average across OECD countries, 30% of students report being distracted by digital devices during class. The problem, therefore, is not technology itself, but the way it affects attention, concentration, and the quality of learning.

The great educational challenge of the future, then, will not merely be teaching young people to use digital tools more effectively. It will be teaching them to think before the tool, beyond the tool, and, at times, even against the tool.

This is where philosophical thinking becomes necessary once again.

Philosophy is not a humanistic luxury, nor an ornament for abstract minds. It is a training ground for what it means to be human. It accustoms us to questioning, to doubt, to contradiction, to complexity. It teaches us to pause before what cannot be immediately resolved.

It trains the mind not to confuse the answer with understanding, information with knowledge, or speed with intelligence. To reclaim thought means to reacquaint ourselves with depth.

It means restoring value to memory, reading, writing, slowness, discussion, error, and effort.

It means understanding that freedom does not arise from the absence of constraints, but from the ability to govern oneself within the constraints of reality.

Technology can be an extraordinary tool, but it cannot become a substitute for inner life. It can broaden the mind, but it cannot replace consciousness. It can facilitate access to knowledge, but it cannot guarantee the formation of judgment.

It can produce answers, but it cannot generate meaning on its own.

For this reason, the real challenge is not to go back. It is not a matter of pitting nostalgia against the future, the analog world against the digital world, tradition against innovation. That would be a false dichotomy. The issue is more subtle: we need to rebuild a pedagogy of the human within technological civilization.

A pedagogy of limits, because without limits there is no maturation.

A pedagogy of memory, because without memory there is no identity.

A pedagogy of attention, because without attention there is no depth.

A pedagogy of responsibility, because without responsibility there is no freedom.

A pedagogy of critical thinking, because without critical thinking, people easily become consumers of answers rather than producers of meaning.

The latest generations are not lost. But they have been handed over to a powerful world without an inner framework adequate to interpret it. They have grown up in an environment that promised connection but often produced loneliness; that promised unlimited access to knowledge but did not always generate culture; that promised freedom but has multiplied invisible dependencies.

We must not condemn them. We must understand them. And, above all, we must ask ourselves who stopped shaping them before they became so fragile.

The silent tragedy of our time does not lie in the absence of education, but in its replacement. Where the adult retreats, the device advances.

 

Where the educational word weakens, the algorithm steps in. Where family and school cease to convey meaning, technology begins to instill habit.

This is where we must start anew.

Not with a war against technology, but with a renewed focus on the human being.

Not by rejecting tools, but by rebuilding the conscience that must guide them.

Not from nostalgia for the past, but from the need to restore to the future a mind capable of inhabiting it.

Because the decisive question of our time is not whether machines will become smarter than humans.

The decisive question is whether humans will retain enough depth, memory, judgment, and freedom to avoid becoming inferior to what they themselves have created.
