There is a time that we cannot read on watches and that does not appear on calendars: it is the time that lives within us. We do not measure it with hands or digital displays, yet it guides our every day. Every heartbeat, every breath, every feeling of hunger or sleep follows a precise rhythm, built by evolution to allow us to tune in to the alternation of day and night. It is a time written in our flesh, in our cells, in our genes. This is not a poetic image, but a scientific truth that chronobiology—the discipline that studies our biological rhythms—is bringing to light with increasingly fascinating details.

At the center of this invisible network is a tiny group of neurons in the hypothalamus, the suprachiasmatic nucleus, our master clock. It receives information from the retina and translates sunlight into commands for the whole body.

It tells us when to wake up and when to fall asleep, modulates body temperature, and regulates the production of melatonin and cortisol. But it is not alone. In recent years, researchers have discovered that every organ, every tissue, even every cell has its own molecular clock. These peripheral clocks control vital functions such as digestion, heartbeat, hormone secretion, and immune system activity.

Consider the liver: its internal clock follows the rhythm of meals. If we eat at irregular times, especially at night, its metabolism becomes disrupted, affecting sugar and fat control. Or the heart: heart cells also have circadian cycles, and studies show that the risk of heart attack is not randomly distributed, but increases at certain times of the day, when blood pressure and hormones reach their peaks. It is a complex symphony, in which the central conductor and the peripheral musicians must remain in tune.

When the harmony is broken, the consequences are not just a little tiredness or insomnia. Science—culminating in the 2017 Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to Jeffrey Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael Young for their studies on circadian rhythm genes—shows that a chronic misalignment of biological clocks increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, depression, cardiovascular disease, and even some cancers. The culprits? Often, it’s lifestyles typical of modern life: night shifts, intercontinental travel, late dinners, prolonged exposure to artificial light, and the inevitable blue light from electronic devices.

The good news is that we can help everything stay in sync. No revolutions are needed, just simple, conscious daily choices. Exposing yourself to natural light in the morning helps the brain reactivate at the right time. Maintaining a certain regularity in meals supports the peripheral clocks of the digestive system. Limiting the use of bright screens in the evening promotes melatonin production and deeper sleep. Sticking to regular rest times strengthens internal cycles.

Even physical activity has its “right time”: in the morning or late afternoon, it improves energy and metabolism, while if practiced late in the evening, it can disturb sleep. The immune system also responds to the circadian rhythm: therapies are more effective when administered at times when the body is most receptive.

It is no coincidence that medicine is moving in this direction. Chronotherapy studies how the time of administration can change the effectiveness of drugs: an antihypertensive, aspirin, or chemotherapy can have very different effects when taken in the morning or in the evening. It is the prospect of personalized treatment based not only on the individual but also on their biological time.

The body is not a machine that can function 24 hours a day. It is a web of pauses and accelerations, of silences and invisible chimes. Every day, inside us, thousands of biological gears are set in motion to remind us that living does not only mean resisting external time, but also respecting what we carry within us. Internal clocks are the silent heart of our health. Learning to listen to them does not mean giving up modernity, but restoring our lives to their most authentic dimension: that of time flowing in harmony with ourselves.
