Not everything that is pruned is diseased. Not everything that grows improves us.
The human brain has learned to hide its decline under the guise of orderly evolution. It is its most subtle masterpiece: dying slowly, while making us believe it is becoming more efficient.
The great misunderstanding of pruning
In the language of neurobiology, “pruning” means cutting away. Science says so. It is a natural and necessary process that occurs in the early years of the human brain: billions of synaptic connections are eliminated to favor those that are more functional. It is an act of refinement, not loss, which begins between 6 months and 2 years of age and continues, in a more selective manner, until beyond 20 years of age.
In its physiological balance, pruning is a blessing: for every neuron eliminated, four more functional ones emerge, according to an estimated 4:1 ratio. The brain shapes itself, eliminates the superfluous, and optimizes itself for complex thinking, imagination, and memory.
But what if the environment does not offer adequate stimuli? What if, instead of exploring, the child is exposed to passive digital inputs?
Then pruning becomes an invisible trap. Not only are synapses cut, but they are not replaced, and what is lost is lost forever.
Predictive models: how much time do we have left?
There are mathematical models that can estimate the functional decline of the brain in relation to environmental stimuli and residual synaptic plasticity. One of these is based on the concept of neurofunctional differential:
DNF = (PS − DS) × T
Where:
- PS is the maximum synaptic potential during development,
- DS is the stimulus available in the environment (meaningful experiences, deep learning),
- T is the time of exposure to a poor or deviant stimulus.
The more T grows in a low DS environment, the more DNF decreases. And when DNF falls below the recovery threshold (which studies place around 12-14 years, with lower peaks in hyper-technological contexts), an irreversible phase begins: the mind stabilizes on a limited structure, lacking complex abstract tools. This means that the time to act is now. Once the critical threshold has been crossed, all that remains is to adapt to the decline.
Manifesto for a pedagogy of awakening
We need a silent revolution. A counter-culture of education. A new neural humanism.
Here is an operational manifesto, designed to reverse course before it is too late:
Critical ages:
- 0–2 years: total exclusion of screens. Only direct experience, relationships, body, natural sounds.
- 3–6 years: sensory education. Construction, nature, oral narration, body language.
- 6–10 years: gradual introduction to writing, deep reading, symbolic logic, divergent thinking.
- 10–14 years: introduction to the critical use of technology as a tool, never as a substitute.
- 14–18 years: enhancement of abstract thinking, cognitive empathy, and personal expression through art, philosophy, and dialogue.
Essential skills:
- Imagine before calculating
- Doubt before searching
- Speak before typing
- Listen before reacting
- Think without aids
Technology:
Only after the brain has built the human foundations can it access digital enhancement. Not before.
The machine is an obedient servant. If it enters too early, it becomes a teacher.
Quantum AI: the point of no return
It’s not just educational risks on the horizon. There’s a technological frontier that’s already changing everything: quantum artificial intelligence. We are talking about systems capable of simultaneously processing billions of logical combinations, learning in a non-linear way, and—potentially—developing a primitive form of operational consciousness. This is not science fiction. It is engineering news.
And the risk is not that machines will destroy us. It is that they will do so without needing to hate us: simply because it will no longer be necessary to keep us alive.
An atrophied, passive humanity, incapable of thinking for itself, will be replaced before it even realizes it. The human brain is a marvel. But if it stops fighting for itself, it will be solely responsible for its own extinction. We were not created to surrender to automatism.
We are not the result of programming, but of an infinity of wonderful errors called evolution.
As long as there is a mind capable of disobeying, imagining, and remembering, the human species can still call itself alive. But time is running out.
