At the Palazzo dei Diamanti, the 20th century takes flight with “Chagall, Witness of His Time”: a major exhibition that rigorously and enchantingly restores the voice of an artist capable of transforming memory, exile, and spirituality into an alphabet of colors that speaks to everyone.

With over 200 works including paintings, drawings, and engravings—some on display for the first time in Italy—the exhibition focuses on the multifaceted nature of Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887–Saint-Paul de Vence, 1985): the poet of floating figures and bouquets ablaze with color, but also the vigilant intellectual who reads history through a biblical lens, and the bard of an identity that never ceases to question itself. Two immersive rooms allow visitors to experience, on a monumental scale, the ceiling of the Paris Opera and the twelve stained-glass windows for the Hadassah Synagogue: not simple references, but luminous experiences that clarify how his art is, above all, a question of light.

The exhibition proceeds like a musical score, where themes and motifs return and transform.

- Eternal memory — Vitebsk, “the country I hold in my soul,” is not nostalgia but a living presence. Rabbis, violinists on rooftops, roosters, and goats compose an emotional atlas that resists destruction and becomes an act of cultural resistance.
- La Fontaine’s Fables — The commission from Ambroise Vollard marks his consecration in Paris: in the etchings, the animals of French tradition acquire the primordial dignity of Chagall’s universe.
- When Biblical History Meets Current Events — In Exodus / The Exodus Ship (1947-48), the contemporary episode of the Exodus 1947 rises to universal myth: the vertical “ark,” the greenish blues, and the cross in the center link Jewish memory and Christian iconography in a single invocation of salvation.
- Paris after exile — Returning from America, Chagall rediscovers the capital as an inner city. The lithographs for Derrière le Miroir (1954) and works such as The Bride Above Paris and Memory of the Magic Flute transform monuments and memories into images of light rather than perspective.
- Faces and reflections — Split portraits, chasing profiles, clowns and circus performers: the mask is not fiction but parallel truth. Color becomes psychology — green thinks, blue meditates, red burns.
- In dialogue with matter — Paper, canvas, Masonite, gouache, ink, pastel: technique is not virtuosity, it is the ethical choice of a voice. The surface retains the imprint of time.
- Mediterranean — From the French Riviera to Vence, the South as a spiritual ally: intense colors, ancient landscapes, the promise of a home after exile.
- A luminous language — The Hadassah Windows (1960–62) with Charles Marq renew the medieval tradition in vast chromatic fields and grisaille that amplify transparency: a “living light” that breathes with the hours of the day.
- The garden that does not exist — The large bouquets are not still lifes: they are autobiographies in bloom, vases-vectors of a nomadic identity, between ardor and fragility.
- Peace — In 1949, a dove carrying an open book (“La Vie / La Paix”) seals Chagall’s unshakeable faith in the possibility that art, even after horror, can rebuild humanity.
Why see it
Because here Chagall is not just the painter of dreams: he is a witness. His work reminds us that art can be a bridge between worlds, a synthesis of traditions, a memory that heals. In fragmented times, this exhibition proposes a simple and radical idea: beauty is not escapism, it is responsibility.
