Between them, on an empty chair, a folder with documents: not love letters, but expert reports, reports, reconstructions. Here too, ultimately, we are talking about bonds.
Valentine’s Day is often described as a celebration of love. Yet, in clinical and legal practice, love rarely appears in its poetic form. Rather, it manifests itself as a dynamic: falling in love, attachment, stable bond, or dependence.
Affective neuroscience and psychoneuroimmunology have, in recent years, begun to engage in dialogue with legal psychology, showing how relational modes influence not only individual well-being, but also behavior, decisions, and, sometimes, responsibility.
Falling in love represents a phase of intense neurobiological activation. Recent neuroimaging studies show that during this experience, dopaminergic circuits similar to those involved in reward and motivation systems are activated. This configuration produces selective focus on the other person, reduced critical thinking, and increased emotional salience. At the same time, changes in cortisol levels and immune response are observed: a state of excitement that also involves temporary physiological vulnerability.
The most recent evolutionary research suggests that falling in love may have developed by exploiting circuits originally intended for primary bonding. The neurobiological system that supports the mother-child relationship—based on security and proximity—would be reactivated in adult romantic relationships, integrating attraction and protection.
This explains why the loss of love is often experienced with a depth similar to mourning.
When the relationship stabilizes, oxytocin, vasopressin, and the endogenous opioid system come into play. Longitudinal studies show that these neurochemical mediators contribute to building trust and reducing social anxiety. However, contemporary literature calls for moving beyond the simplified view of the ‘love hormone’. In individuals with insecure attachment, oxytocin can amplify the search for closeness to the point of turning it into a need, sometimes into control.
It is at this point that scientific discourse meets legal discourse.
In recent years, forensic psychology has begun to systematically integrate attachment models into the assessment of conflictual relationship dynamics. Studies on separation and custody proceedings have shown that anxious or disorganized attachment styles are associated with greater conflict and difficulties in parental cooperation.
In criminology, research on dysfunctional intimate relationships indicates that persecutory behaviors, such as relational stalking, are frequently linked to hyperactivation of the attachment system. This is not simply aggression, but a defensive response to the perception of loss of connection.
The subject does not act to destroy the relationship, but to prevent its end.
This distinction is relevant in judicial contexts. Many contemporary expert reports analyze whether the behavior stems from persecutory intent or affective dysregulation. The difference does not eliminate responsibility, but it does guide risk assessment and prevention interventions.
Even in cases of domestic violence, research shows that fear of abandonment, associated with low emotional regulation capacity, can fuel conflict escalation. This does not justify the behavior, but it clarifies its roots.
At the same time, psychoneuroimmunology has shown that relationships are not just psychological experiences: they are biological environments. Unstable and unpredictable relationships increase low-grade inflammation and autonomic dysregulation. Conversely, stable bonds promote resilience to stress and better cortisol modulation.
Recent studies indicate that the quality of relationships even affects cardiovascular health and immune response. Love, in this sense, is not just a private experience: it is a public health factor.
When the bond evolves further, what we can define as love as a good emerges. No longer just activation or simple security, but integration between emotional and cognitive systems.
Relational neuroscience shows that mature bonds involve greater participation of the prefrontal areas, associated with mentalization and impulse regulation.
This integration also has legal implications. Studies on family mediation programs show that individuals with greater mentalization capacity manage conflicts better and reach more stable agreements.
In other words, the quality of relational functioning affects the outcome of disputes.
We can therefore distinguish three levels: falling in love as motivational activation, attachment as a security system, and love as a regulatory construct. The first ignites desire, the second stabilizes, and the third allows freedom within the relationship.
The waiting room empties. The folder remains closed on the table. Outside, someone turns on the evening lights. Not all stories end with a sentence; some turn into understanding.
And sometimes, just when need gives way to choice, the bond ceases to hold and begins to exist.
