Brain and gut: is there a dialogue between these two organs? Yes, even if they don’t talk, they have always guided our lives.
It’s early morning. A woman sips her coffee in the kitchen, ready to face an important meeting. She hasn’t even finished her cup when she feels her stomach tighten. A young man on the other side of the world is waiting for a job interview: his hands are sweating, his mouth is dry, but above all, his stomach is rumbling and contracting. A man traveling stops for a moment to contemplate a sunset: inexplicably, in that silence, his breathing calms down and so does his stomach.
These are common, almost banal scenes, yet they tell a truth that science has only recently begun to explain: our gut is not a passive organ, but an active protagonist of emotional well-being. It is in constant dialogue with the brain, to the point that emotions are reflected in the stomach and what happens in the belly shapes thoughts and moods.
For decades, we have told ourselves a simple story: the brain commands, the body obeys. But research today tells us something different. We are not guided by one brain, but by two: the first lives in the skull and governs thoughts and decisions. The second, hidden in the gut, has an autonomous nervous network that influences emotions, behaviors, and even the risk of developing diseases.
In the 1990s, neurobiologist Michael Gershon at Columbia University called it the “second brain.” It was not a poetic image: the intestine is home to more than 100 million neurons, a quantity similar to that of the spinal cord. This network, called the enteric nervous system, not only controls digestion but also communicates constantly with the brain through the vagus nerve, a bundle of fibers that functions as a biochemical highway.
And that dialogue can be felt. “Butterflies in the stomach,” “a knot in the stomach,” the feeling that “the gut doesn’t lie”: all expressions that belong to our everyday language and are now confirmed by neuroscience. These are not suggestions: they are concrete signs of a biological connection.
Studies over the last twenty years have shown that the gut microbiota—the universe of trillions of bacteria that live in our digestive system—plays a decisive role in this exchange. At Harvard Medical School, they have highlighted how imbalances in the gut flora are associated with anxiety and depression. The Karolinska Institute has pointed out that animals without microbiota become more anxious and less resilient. The University of California, San Diego, has discovered that certain molecules produced by gut bacteria can reach the brain directly, modulating neuron activity.
The most surprising fact? More than 90% of serotonin – the neurotransmitter that regulates mood – is produced in the gut. That’s why when the gut suffers, the mind often falters too.
This connection is not just about everyday stress. Studies published in Nature Neuroscience hypothesize that Parkinson’s disease may originate in the gut, where abnormal proteins accumulate and then travel up to the brain along the vagus nerve. Other studies link chronic intestinal disorders to an increased risk of depression. It is a view that opens up new and unexpected therapeutic scenarios.
But the real revolution concerns everyday life. Common disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome clearly show how the brain and gut influence each other: stress worsens symptoms, but abdominal pain amplifies anxiety. It is a vicious circle that can only be broken by learning to treat ‘mind and gut’ as a single system.
Research into psychobiotics—probiotics specifically designed to promote mental well-being—is still in its infancy, but already shows promise. Studies published in Translational Psychiatry show that strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium can reduce symptoms of anxiety and mild depression. We are not talking about miracle cures, but about a new field that could change the future of psychiatry.
Yet much can already be done now, in our daily choices. Science suggests some guidelines: a varied diet, rich in fiber and fermented foods to nourish the microbiota; reduction of sugars and industrial foods that deplete the bacterial flora; regular sleep, which protects both the intestine and the brain; moderate but constant physical activity, capable of reducing inflammation; relaxation practices such as mindfulness, which have been shown to be useful in rebalancing the brain-gut axis.
It is no coincidence that traditional disciplines, from Ayurveda to Mediterranean medicine, have always linked nutrition, breathing, and mental serenity. Today, research confirms that the body and mind are not separate entities, but parts of a single organism that communicates constantly.
We are therefore much more than a brain that thinks and a body that obeys. We are the result of a silent dialogue that runs through our guts and thoughts. And learning to listen to that subtle voice that rises from the gut means taking care not only of our digestion, but also of our memory, mood, and emotions.
The future of medicine will move in this direction: psychiatrists and gastroenterologists working together, integrated therapies combining neuroscience and nutrition. But even today, in our everyday choices, we have the opportunity to cultivate this balance.
Because health comes not only from our thoughts, but also from what grows, transforms, and lives silently within us.
