The brain that changes with us. It’s called neuroplasticity.

Do experiences, emotions, and learning shape brain connections? Absolutely.

Imagine a lively city that is constantly expanding. Streets open, close, and are rebuilt. Some neighborhoods become central, while others empty out. This is how our brain works. It is not a static organ, but a network in perpetual motion: it adapts, shapes itself, and transforms.

This phenomenon has a powerful and poetic name: neuroplasticity. Brain plasticity, also known as central nervous system plasticity, refers to the brain’s ability to modify its structure and functions depending on the activity of its neurons, related, for example, to stimuli received from the external environment, in response to traumatic injuries or pathological changes, and in relation to the individual’s development process.

For years, science believed that the adult brain was a closed system, destined to follow rigid and immutable patterns. But in recent decades, discoveries in the field of neuroscience have completely overturned this view. Today we know that the nervous system is plastic, dynamic, and surprisingly receptive to change. Every experience, every intense emotion, every gesture learned or forgotten leaves a mark. Something changes: some connections are strengthened, others are weakened. The very structure of the brain transforms over time, shaping itself in response to life.

The adult brain has an ability to adapt that has long been underestimated,” explains Manuela Cancedda of the Italian Institute of Technology. “It’s not just about learning new skills, but also about responding in new ways to emotional events, reworking traumas, and changing perspectives.”

Every time we repeat a gesture, a word, or a thought, we are reinforcing a circuit. But every time we choose not to do so, we are creating space for an alternative. Neuroplasticity is also this: the concrete possibility of changing direction.

Learning, in particular, is one of the most powerful forms of transformation of the brain. Learning a new language, a musical instrument, or even just a different route home activates complex mechanisms: new synapses are created and connections are consolidated.

We have observed structural changes in the brains of even 70- and 80-year-olds who consistently engaged in a new activity,” says Norman Doidge, psychiatrist and author of the book The Brain That Changes Itself. “This means that it is never too late to train the mind. Old age is not a sentence to rigidity, but can be a fertile time for transformation.”

But it is not only voluntary experiences that leave their mark. Emotions, especially intense ones, also profoundly shape the brain. Suffering, for example, can alter the activity of the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, influencing the way we interpret the world.

The same is true of happiness, love, fear, and loneliness. Emotions are not an accessory to life: they are a tool for construction. “The brain records everything,” observes Lutz Jäncke at the University of Zurich. “Every emotion we experience changes our future perception. It is as if the emotional experience rewrites the rules of our reactivity.”

For this reason, many psychological therapies today are based on the concept of neuroplasticity. Interventions such as integrative psychotherapy or EMDR act on neural networks, reconfiguring automatic responses. Treatment, in all its forms, leaves a biological imprint.

However, neuroplasticity also has a dark side. Dysfunctional habits, chronic pain, addiction, and anxiety are also forms of brain learning. The brain reinforces what is repeated, regardless of its positive or negative value. This means that, in the absence of new stimuli or awareness, we can become trapped in rigid neural patterns. But this is where the good news lies: what has been learned can be unlearned. Every connection can be weakened if we stop using it. It is not a simple or immediate process. It requires intention, time, and above all, consistency. But it is possible. Every day, with every choice, we build or destroy something.

Reading, writing, loving, listening to music, walking, reflecting, changing our point of view: these are all actions that fuel neuroplasticity. Even silence and boredom, if experienced with presence, can open up new spaces.

In the end, the message is clear and powerful: the brain changes with us, and we can choose how to change with it. We are not only what we experience, but also what we decide to become. Every meaningful experience can leave an imprint, every emotion can be a tool, every thought can become a possibility. It is not just a poetic metaphor: it is a biological truth.

How can we really stimulate neuroplasticity in our daily lives? We don’t need futuristic technologies or laboratory experiments: all we need are conscious, consistent, meaningful actions. Here are three accessible, effective, and scientifically proven ways to do this:

  2. Whether it’s a language, a musical instrument, a manual hobby, or even just cooking a different recipe, active learning creates new neural circuits. The brain loves novelty, as long as it is accompanied by commitment.
  3. Move your body with intention:
  4. Physical activity not only improves overall health, but also stimulates the release of neurotrophic factors such as BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), which are essential for the growth and plasticity of nerve cells. Even a daily walk can become a brain exercise if done with attention to your breathing, the landscape, and your sensations.
  5. Cultivate mindful emotions:
  6. Emotions cannot be controlled, but they can be listened to. Time spent in silence and deep reflection helps the brain “clean up” stress-dominated circuits and create new ways of responding. Authentic relationships, empathy, and gratitude are also neuroplastic acts.

As Richard Davidson reminds us, “well-being is a skill that can be trained, just like a muscle.”

And the brain is our most faithful ally in this. It accompanies us, follows us, anticipates us.

And when we ask it to change, it often does.
