Of course, unexpected events can happen, but a simple oversight or change of plans for the customer, restaurant, and its management can result in considerable financial damage, especially if it happens repeatedly.

Just think of the consequences of an empty table: lost revenue, increased costs, unused staff, wasted food and raw materials, potential refusal of other reservations… this is the famous “No Show”

But what solutions can be adopted to reduce the impact of this phenomenon?

It must be said that, to date, there is a lack of dedicated regulations and ad hoc regulatory measures, but this does not mean that you cannot protect yourself, starting from the awareness that, as a result of the reservation itself, i.e., not guaranteed by a deposit, penalty, or credit card with pre-authorization for charging, the restaurateur is the only party liable for any obligations.

Only in the presence of a specific agreement between the customer and the restaurant owner at the time of booking, which makes the request for table availability conditional upon the payment of a deposit or the provision of payment card details to the restaurant owner, is a mutual legal commitment established between the parties that makes it lawful, in the event of non-compliance by the customer, for the restaurant owner to claim compensation as a result of the failure to reallocate the table.

Functional to the conclusion of what is a real contract, the use of increasingly digitized management and monitoring tools, through online forms on the restaurant’s website, dedicated platforms, and software, which, compared to the usual telephone reservation, for example, constitute a more direct and immediate way of defining such an agreement, in which the parties agree and regulate, from the first contact, the terms and conditions of cancellation, the offer of a guarantee, the amount of a penalty, and the credit card, in the event that the restaurant owner is ghosted by the customer.

In conclusion, no-shows are an increasingly widespread problem that can have significant economic and organizational consequences for operators in the sector.

Although there is no single solution that is valid for all businesses, adopting clear, transparent cancellation policies and preventive measures, such as sending reminders and confirmations, and managing the phenomenon with effective and legally sustainable strategies can help reduce its negative effects.

The fact remains that, beyond any legal remedy, only a greater sense of responsibility, common sense, and consideration for the work of others can increase awareness and perception of the damage caused by those who make reservations and then fail to honor their commitments.
