Pastry chef Giovanni Mangione honored in Ravanusa

On February 16, Ravanusa experienced a significant day dedicated to gastronomic identity and collective memory. During a public ceremony, the Rete dei Borghi Genius Loci (Network of Genius Loci Villages), led by Nino Sutera, officially awarded the municipality the Denominazione Comunale (De.Co.), a recognition that protects and promotes authentic expressions of local heritage.

The De.Co. was awarded to two symbols of Ravanusa tradition:

the Raviola di Ravanusa and the Totomè, products that tell the story, knowledge, and taste of a community deeply connected to its roots.

The public hearing was promoted by chef Leonardo Massaro, who, together with Calogero La Mattina, organized the event, helping to transform the initiative into a moment of cultural as well as gastronomic sharing.

Among the protagonists of the day was pastry chef Giovanni Mangione, a leading figure in contemporary Sicilian pastry making. With numerous regional and national awards to his name, Mangione stands out not only for his technical excellence but also for his design skills: he is the creator and coordinator of major confectionery events, during which he has created spectacular 500-600 kg maxi cakes, authentic sugar structures that combine creativity and precision.

Precisely because of his commitment to promoting Sicilian confectionery traditions and his participation in the hearing dedicated to De.Co., Mangione was honored by Mayor Salvatore Pitrola, who emphasized his role as an ambassador for the island’s excellence.

During the ceremony, the pastry chef also met chef and director Vincenzo La Cognata, president of Himera Movie APS, expressing his full support for the association’s cultural and social project. On this occasion, Mangione chose to join as a volunteer, officially entering the Himera Movie Artists’ Register.

Not only that, he also announced his future teaching role in an inclusive pastry course promoted by the association, with the aim of passing on skills, passion, and opportunities to the younger generation, thus contributing to the spread of gastronomic culture as a tool for social growth.

At a time when the value of territories increasingly depends on the ability to preserve and reinterpret their roots, the day in Ravanusa showed how tradition can become a driving force for the future: through the recognition of local excellence and the commitment of professionals such as Giovanni Mangione, pastry-making is confirmed not only as an art of taste, but also as a language of identity and a tool for inclusion, capable of transforming memory and knowledge into shared opportunities.
