The cafe that walks: in New York, no one stops

There is one detail that immediately jumps out at you when you come to, or live in, New York: no one stops for coffee.

They take him away. Always. Whether it’s a steaming paper cup or a liter travel mug, coffee here is a beverage on the go.

You sip it while crossing the street, running to the subway or shaking off emails. It is part of the daily choreography: fast pace, earbuds, coffee canteen clutched in hand.

And it is not just a personal choice. It is structural.

Bars almost never have a counter to lean against. There is no room to stay, just a neat line that goes all the way to the door and then away. As if even the environment wants to remind you that time is short, that you have to move, that you can’t linger.

Drinking coffee, yes. But do it standing up, alone, on the way somewhere. At first, I admit, it was uncomfortable.

Coming from a culture where stopping for coffee is almost a sacred gesture, I always felt a little out of place. As if standing still with the cup in my hand was a distraction, a weakness.

And then there were the coffees to take to friends. How many times have I found myself with two takeout glasses, one on top of the other, balanced precariously as I tried with my free hand to pull out my phone to see where my friend was.

Result: spilled coffee, foam on them, stained jackets, pants marked with halos.

More than once I arrived at appointments looking like I had breakfast-but on!

But the truth, the one you breathe here, is that here coffee is not the break. It is the accessory. It is the fuel for the day.

You don’t need a time to drink it, because any time is good. The important thing is that it is there. And that it moves with you.

In a city where people are always running, even coffee has to keep up.

It’s Truth!
