Woody Allen debuts with his first novel, published by La Nave di Teseo, entitled: “What’s Happening with Baum? “
Through the protagonist’s experiences, the book demonstrates that intelligence does not protect us from making wrong choices. Baum makes the same mistakes: he is a man who talks to himself, which initially makes him seem ridiculous, but then the situation becomes heartbreaking.
His wife once found him brilliant, but now she despises him. ” Overall, in life, we make many more right decisions than wrong ones, but the wrong ones resonate more than the others,” explained the four-time Oscar-winning director. Baum is a profound man, he always falls in love with the same person, he lives by a high set of values, in fact he always quotes philosophers, but over time he realizes that philosophy becomes a prison and the only way out is madness.
Woody Allen, a reference point for modern American comedy, once again used synthesis and irony in writing the story, as he has done in the films he has produced over the years. His daily habit of writing with pen and paper helped him to create a book rather than a film and allowed him to complete a novel dealing with the themes dear to him: psychoanalysis, the bourgeoisie, capitalism, literature, philosophy, and jazz music. Writing a novel at the dawn of his nineties proved easier for him; when you write a book, you can tear out a page if you don’t like it, but with films, everything is more complex.
According to Mel Brooks, he is a very fast writer of jokes, unlike anyone else. At the moment, it seems difficult to find funding for the films. Just as finding the idea, the inspiration, is more complicated for Woody Allen than creating the work itself. Still in love with sport, he was a decent athlete, with few, select friends. He recently dedicated a letter to Diane Keaton, who recently passed away.
He is a man with a pure heart, and Diane was perhaps the greatest love of his life. He has said many times that he found her so beautiful that he began to doubt his own sanity. Their love lasted about three years, during which time he won an Oscar for Annie Hall, and she took part in The Godfather saga.
Diane is still his muse, with her seemingly carefree and absent-minded air. She became a mother suddenly, but she often repeated with pride that she had lacked nothing except men for 35 years. She is the kind of actress and woman who taught the girls of her time a lot and could teach today’s girls a lot. She has acted alongside Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, and other names of her own artistic caliber. What remains of Diane today is a great human and professional story, and of Woody, a present yet to be written.
